     Samuel C. Lewis 'In Feb 1816, Samuel C. Lewis, Gideon Lewis and Roswell Lewis, b rothers, and Elias and Amos Clift, ant their sister, Esther Clif t, started from Poultney, Vt., and, traveling with a lumber wago n, arrived in Gaines March 19th, haveing been twenty-five days m aking the jouney. Arba Chubb arrived in the town (Gaines) with h is wife and child on the 15th, and, finding no better accomodati ons they quartered in the old log house built by Mrs. Noah Burge ss, which had not been inhabited for some time, and about whic h the snow was piled to a considerable height. The Lewis brother s, having no other shelter, occupied this house with them. On th e night after their arrival, and while they were all asleep, th e stone chimney, which had been unsettled by the thawing of th e earth at its base, fell in with a loud crash, but fortunatel y none of the party were hurt. Samuel and Gideon Lewis bought a n article for a hundred and twenty-five acres of land of Lansin g Bailey. This lot was located in Gaines Basin, and Bailey had e rected a log cabin on the land, getting their cooking and wasin g done by Mrs. Bailey, and working for Bailey every seventh da y in payment for the service. Roswell Lewis returned to Vermon t after a three years' residence in Gaines.' p. 228-229

He began military service circa 1813 at Poultney, Rutland County , Vermont, 'Samuel C. Lewis was born in Poultney, Vt. in 1796. W hen seventeen years of age he enlisted in the war of 1812, and s erved in the company of Captain Miller, afterward the founder o f the sect called Millerites. He served about two years and foug ht at Plattsburg and French Mills. Samuel resided on the (Bailey ) farm during the rest of his life. He married Anna Warner, of C ornwall, Vt. She died in 1841. He died in 1877. It is said tha t he made the journey between Gaines and Poultney, Vt. twelve ti mes on foot.' He ended military service circa 1815. He was born in 1796.1 He married Anna Frisby in 1819.1 Samuel C. Lewis married Anna (Eunice?) Warner in 1824.1 Samuel C. Lewis died in 1877.1
